El Hospital San Carlos tiene su ubicación a la entrada de la selva del Estado de Chiapas, en el pueblo de Altamirano. Es un hospital no lucrativo que atiende principalmente a la población Indígena de bajos recursos económicos de la región.

El hospital fue fundado en el año 1969 por la Misión Dominicana con el Obispo de San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Don Samuel Ruiz García, ante la falta de atención de salud en la región. En 1976 se traspasó el cargo del hospital a las Hijas de La Caridad de San Vicente de Paúl, quienes han continuado la gestión del hospital hasta el día de hoy.

Hospital San Carlos is situated at the entrance of the jungles of Chiapas, in the town of Altamirano. This nonprofit hospital primarily serves the low income indigenous population in the region.

The hospital was founded in 1969 by the Dominican Mission to the Bishop of San Cristobal de Las Casas, Don Samuel Ruiz Garcia, at a time when health care in the region was absent. In 1976, the management of the hospital was transferred to St. Vincent de Paul's Daughters of Charity, who continue to manage the hospital today.

En Chiapas aproximadamente un cuarto de la población es de origen Indígena. La mayoría vive según sus costumbres y en cercanía con la naturaleza desde hace muchos siglos; son auto subsistentes y viven de la cosecha de la milpa, principalmente maíz y frijol. Desafortunadamente la situación socioeconómica de esta población es de muy bajos recursos.

En el hospital 89% de la población atendida es de origen indígena, en primer lugar Tzeltal, en segundo lugar Tojolabal, y una minoría es de origen Cho'ol y Tsotzil.

Hospital San Carlos brinda una atención humanista de salud, sin discriminación, con respeto y entendimiento de las culturas en la región. El hospital lucha para dar un servicio de calidad, con un costo económico accesible para los pacientes. Una de las maneras de pago es mediante el trueque.

La arquitectura del hospital, junto con sus jardines, logra crear una atmósfera de familiaridad paralos pacientes y trabajadores que viven rodeados por la naturaleza.

In Chiapas, about a quarter of the population is of indigenous origin. Most live according to their century-old customs, which include a closeness to nature and self-subsistence via farming (mainly corn and beans). Unfortunately, the socioeconomic status of this population is very poor.

Eighty-nine percent of the patient population served by Hospital San Carlos is indigenous; Tzeltal is the primary indigenous community, followed by Tojolabal, and lastly by Cho'ol and Tsotzil. 

San Carlos Hospital provides health care in a humanistic fashion, without discrimination, and with respect for and understanding of the diverse cultures in the region. The hospital struggles to provide quality service at a cost affordable to patients and often accepts barter as a form of payment. 

The open architecture of the hospital, almost contiguous with its surrounding gardens, creates a familiar environment for patients and workers who are used to living surrounded by nature.
